**** POSSIBLE SPOILERS BELOW ****
As I mentioned in a previous post, I recently watched the first two seasons of the TV show Heroes. You can find my thoughts on the first season here.
After a delightful first season I was prepared to thoroughly enjoy its follow-up. I had heard bad comments on the net but assumed they were either exaggerations or unreasonably harsh, similar to other criticism one is likely to stumble upon. Sadly, I found most of these comments were accurate.
The season starts off four months after the first season’s finale. Peter is missing and Nathan is grieving his loss while his mother scoffs at his failure to move on. Claire and her family have relocated to Costa Verde, California and are running from The Company and attempting to keep a low profile. Matt and Suresh, in one of my favorite aspects of the season, have adopted Molly, though both of them maintain their own agendas.
Overall the season is not bad, per se, but does not come close to reaching the high points set by its predecessor. Even at only eleven episodes I found myself getting bored easily by the lack of character advancement and parts of the plot. Certain characters feel stuck in previous storylines and others could’ve been better left off the series (Niki and Micah were a complete bore and did nothing to move the story along). Peter, whom one expect would’ve grown after last season’s events, is too easily manipulated by Adam, the main antagonist, which makes it easy to ignore a few badass scenes he has in the first episodes.
Once again, Hiro was the most interesting character for me and is central to the development of the plot and of Adam. His travel into the past and his role in the transformation of Takezo Kensei from a hopeless drunk to the character who would later appear as Adam is intriguing and fascinating. Adam, however, feels too absent even though his menace to the other founding members of the company should have been a constant throughout the season’s development.
Finally, The Company remains interesting even though its embodiment this season, Bob, was unappealing and boring. I keep looking forward to Angela Petrelli stepping up, taking over, and exploiting her potential as a character. I have heard this actually happens in the third season so things might be looking up.
All in all I wouldn’t say the show wasn’t enjoyable but it still wasn’t comparable to the first season. I still would recommend it to anyone interested if only to see what happens after the events of the first season and then move on to the third season, which I’ve heard is much better.
